About me

Aitemad Muhanna-Matar served as Assistant Professorial Research Fellow at 番茄社区 from 2016 to 2020, and was a research fellow between 2013 and 2016. She won the Elisabeth Schüssler Fiorenza New Scholar Award First-Place Prize for her article on women's moral agency in Gaza. Based on her research experience with displaced Syrian refugees, she served as an academic mentor to a group of Syrian academics in Turkey in 2019 at CARA (The Council for At-Risk Academics). With research experience in gender, agency, and radicalisation, she served on multiple projects across Arab countries and the Middle East. This includes a regional research project funded by the EU to analyse the anti-radicalisation programmes adopted in five Arab countries, providing a list of policy and programmatic recommendations. She also conducted an Oxfam-funded regional research project that examined women’s political participation in the Arab region.

Aitemad served as the international expert on gender and Women, Peace, and Security (WPS) at UNDP in Yemen from 2021-2024, where she advised the government of Yemen on implementing its first WPS-National Action Plan (NAP). From 1996 to 2008, she worked as a development and gender advisor and consultant for the World Bank and UNDP in the Occupied Palestinian Territories.
