Conor Gearty

• Conor was in the Court of Appeal in November 2022, arguing (ultimately unsuccessfully) that the right to marry in the European Convention on Human Rights meant that the holders of widows’ pensions should not lose their pension in the event of remarriage (as is the case in a number of public sector pension schemes): Green and others v Metropolitan Police Commissioner [2022] EWCA Civ 1686
• With his colleague Giulia Gentile, Conor gave evidence to the Joint Committee on Human Rights in relation to its work on the (now withdrawn)

Tarun Khaitan

• Gave expert evidence upon invitation by the Indian Law Commission to comment on the discriminatory aspects entailed in a proposal to replace India’s religion-specific system of family laws with a single, uniform, civil code applicable to all persons (August 2023).

• Has given expert evidence, written and oral, to the House of Commons Foreign Affairs Select Committee, the Foreign and Commonwealth Office, and the Stiftung für Wissenschaft und Politik in Berlin (on Scottish Independence), to the House of Commons Political and Constitutional Reform Select Committee (on the role of courts under a written constitution), and to the House of Commons Scottish Affairs Committee (on withdrawal from the European Union).
• Is part of a network of international researchers mainly from India, the EU, and the UK who have been working collaboratively on democracy and diversity in India and the EU for the past decade.
