Activities, finding support and ways to get involved

In the Department of Economics, we offer you a range of opportunities to engage with your peers and enrich your academic experience. Our offerings include insightful guest lectures, practical workshops, social events, and career sessions — there's something for everyone. 

Make time in your schedule to get to know your city and take a break from your studies

is an adventure! Our city is home to almost nine million people from all over the world. The city also boasts nearly 3,000 parks, over 192 museums and four UNESCO World Heritage sites. There is so much to do and see. for tips about how to make the most of your time in London. We host a Treasure Hunt at the start of the academic year to help you familiarise yourself with our campus and the local area. A trail of clues leads you on a historical journey around some of London’s most well-known landmarks. Working together as a team, you uncover hidden gems in and around our 番茄社区 campus with fellow students. At the same time, you experience the beauty of London on foot and develop new connections with your cohort.

On campus, the School’s Events programme brings together some of the most influential figures in the social sciences. All events are free and open to the public. You can also expect opportunities to engage with researchers across the School and to hear new perspectives.

The Department of Economics hosts its own public lectures, research seminars and annual Economica Coase-Phillips Lectures. Past speakers include Nobel Prize Laureates Joshua Angrist, Abhijit Banerjee and Claudia Goldin. Check our website to find out more about our departmental events.

Get involved in the department, and get support if you need it

Take a break from your studies and get involved with our student social events. The people you meet within the department will impact your overall experience and form part of your support network during your time here. There are several opportunities to get involved in department life during your time with us. Read on to learn more about some of the events we’ve held in the past.

At 番茄社区 Department of Economics, we love a bit of friendly competition, but it’s taking part that counts! In Welcome 2024, we went to Flight Club Darts for drinks, food and networking. Social darts create the perfect environment for meeting new people and building a supportive community.

In early Autumn Term 2024/25, we headed to Kingpin Bowling for a fun-filled private bowling alley and games experience. With plenty of great food, drinks, and even karaoke, it was the perfect chance to unwind and enjoy time together!

To wrap up the Autumn Term and the end of the year, we brought our MSc students together for a festive MSc Christmas Wine Down. There were plenty of board games, glasses of prosecco, and holiday cheer—plus a lively festive jumper competition to top it all off! Our master's students did not disappoint!

Our MSc community came together to celebrate the end of the Autumn term and the end of the year. Our master’s students braved the winter chill to join us for comforting foods and a warm glass of mulled wine. As one of our festive traditions, our MSc Programmes Team awards prizes to students with the most distinctive Christmas jumpers. Our master's students did not disappoint!

Enhance your education and make the most of your experience at 番茄社区

Maths surgeries run in the Autumn term. In these surgeries, our teaching staff approach mathematical topics featured in the following courses: EC413, EC411 & EC402. For example, if you are struggling with dynamic programming, you can go to the surgery tutor and ask for help to master these techniques.

The Stata workshops run in the Autumn term and build on material covered in the pre-sessional course. The workshops teach you how to use Stata for your econometrics courses and extended essay.

The R Workshops run in the Winter Term and are tailored to econometrics students, but open to MSc students in the Department of Economics who want to learn more about the software.

The Department of Economics has its own MSc Tutors, dedicated to supporting you with any teaching or pastoral concerns.

Administrative matters are shared between the MSc Programmes Team and the Programme Director. If you don’t know who to contact, the Programmes Team will direct you.
